What it is about

A bridge from your own school into new territory

The Wholeness Work® by Connirae Andreas leads from the everyday experience of the ‘I’ into direct experiencing, gently, precisely and surprisingly simply, into the wholeness that C. G. Jung called the Self. This book places the young method on the great maps of psychology: in the developmental models of Piaget, Erikson, Loevinger and Graves, and on Jung’s path of individuation.

Out of that comes a SELF-oriented psychology of wholeness, a psychology that takes its bearings from the Self: the Self is the way and at the same time the goal.

The backbone of the book

Eight levels, two movements

Clare W. Graves described the development of human values as a pendulum: every level that strengthens the I is followed by one that puts the We in the foreground, and the other way round. The book brings these eight levels together with Jane Loevinger’s ego development, with Piaget and Erikson, and with Connirae’s stages of transformation. The diagram shows this pendulum movement as a zigzag between individual and communal values.

The Graves model with eight value levels in a zigzag: G1, G3, G5 and G7 on the left, G2, G4, G6 and G8 on the right.

About the book

“Ralph has worked directly with me in many trainings, which puts him in a uniquely good position to write about this work conceptually. For anyone interested in how The Wholeness Work® and Core Transformation® fit within the larger landscape of psychology, this book builds a bridge that has not been published anywhere else.”

The structure

Four parts

The first two parts map out what already exists. The last two are the bridge that has not been published anywhere else: The Wholeness Work in Jung’s map of the soul, and in the developmental models of Graves and Loevinger.

  1. Theoretical Foundations

The paradigm shift in psychology, the Self in Jung, Rogers, Maslow and in transpersonal psychology, and the developmental models of Piaget, Erikson, Kohlberg, Loevinger and Graves.

  2. The Methods of Connirae Andreas

The Wholeness Work: background and origin, the preliminary exercise, the Basic Process, the five basic principles, the Reclaiming Inner Authority process and the four Developmental Stages of Transformation. Core Transformation: the Outcome Chain, the five clusters of Core States and the maturing of our parts.

  3. C. G. Jung, Individuation and the Shadow Dynamics

Jung’s map of the soul: the I-system, the complexes, archetypes, persona, shadow, anima and animus, the psychological types and the ego-Self axis. Alongside them, eight shadow dynamics in the line of Reich, Lowen and Kurtz, each with its repressed opposite pole. And then the interweaving: Connirae’s parts as Jung’s complexes, the Outcome Chain as finality, the Core States as an experience of the Self, the I-system as a system of functional contractions, and every integration as the transcendent function.

  4. Individuation and the Integrative Models of Development

The two septaves. The first builds up the personality and brings the shadow into being as it does so, most strongly where, at Graves4, the rules migrate inward. The second brings the repressed home. Which format works on which layer of the onion, how the practice changes from the early to the middle phase, and where the septave points, there where the maps of psychology end.
